The EACS was founded in 2009 by the European CanCer Organization (ECCO) following a proposal from Julio Celis. In May 2017, the EACS became a Swedish legal structure, “ideell förening,” an independent association with the administration in Stockholm, Sweden. Since 2021 the EACS has also had an office in Brussels, Belgium, at the Fondation Universitaire.
The Governing Board consists of the President, a Vice-President, a Secretary General and six Board members.
The EACS Membership consists of 270 fellows/members covering the complete cancer research continuum from basic/preclinical to clinical and prevention research, implementation into the healthcare system, followed up by outcomes and health economics research, with the latter two encompassing all components of cancer therapeutics/care and prevention.
Fellows are elected yearly by their peers based on the distinctiveness of their contributions to cancer research and cancer care.
EACS attempts to achieve its mission through several routes;
The EACS has advocated the launch of a European Mission on Cancer, now spearheaded in Horizon Europe and continues to engage and work together with all stakeholders in the cancer research continuum, in particular with EU and national representatives, policymakers and key opinion leaders, scientific societies, patient organisations and other scientific academies worldwide to enhance the reach and effectiveness of this endeavour as well as that of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan.
Priority areas for EACS work originate from the EACS Board, the Science Policy Committee and Fellows. They are formulated in response to projects and consultations from the European Commission, the European Parliament and other relevant European Institutions.
